Over the last thirteen years, our understanding of eating and baking gluten-free has grown immensely, and so has our menu.

We take the potential health risks of gluten contamination as seriously as the need for our pastries to taste delicious. We are continually educating ourselves on new research and information regarding Celiac Disease, gluten-intolerance, and gluten-free baking. In addition to our gluten awareness, we train all our employees about the risk of cross-contamination from other allergens. As part of our commitment to being 100% gluten free, we do extensive ingredient research to ensure that everything we use, as well as our facility, is clean of gluten. The bakery is a dedicated gluten free facility, to eliminate any risk of gluten cross-contamination. Stop by the shop to sample our tasty treats, made for everyone! In 2017 the bakery moved again, to 140 NE Broadway St., to make room for a larger production facility and a retail shop. With this move came a name change, to celebrate the original Gems: Anne’s daughters Greta and Emma Miller. By April of 2011, the bakery had outgrown its SW Corbett location and moved to N. Owner Anne Miller started baking gluten free at Corbett Coffee Plant in 2006 when her daughter was first diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Gluten Free Gem is an independent, family run bakery located in Portland’s Lloyd District. We will all get through this together, keeping in mind the most vulnerable in our community. We will update this page as new information becomes available. We believe it is the right choice at this time, not for our own business, but for the safety of the community at large. Moving forward, we’re asking for your support of this decision to limit our offerings and extending our mask requirement. This is our way of easing the workload on our very limited staff so we can keep everyone healthy and stress-free during these uncertain times.

In order to mitigate the community spread of the Coronavirus, we are currently only offering takeout service. You might notice that we’re still working with a somewhat limited menu. We will be sure to update customers when we decide it’s safe to lift our personal mask requirement. As with the previous mask mandate lift back in 2021, we are being cautious not only for the safety of our staff but also for our customers. Although the statewide mask mandate lifted on March 12th 2022 we are still be requiring masks for anyone coming in to our retail shop. We are still requiring masks for anyone 5 years of age or older. Here at Gluten Free Gem we’ve always run on a mission of supporting and protecting our employees, individuals in the allergy friendly food community, and the Portland community at large-and the Coronavirus crisis has been a great opportunity for us to step up as a business and practice these very important values.
